What do you think I should do with our bedroom?

I know you've all felt it... That urge to redecorate and make changes...  Well, I'm starting to feel that urge again, and it's our bedroom that I'm getting the urge to change.  Of course, paint will be involved--that's a given. I have some ideas of what I'd like to do, but I thought I'd ask what you would do if you were decorating our bedroom.

Here are some pictures...

As you can see, the bedroom is so small that the night stands have to face the bed in order to fit. Believe it or not, the drawers actually open all the way, but they're not easy to get into.

The picture above was taken from the doorway. There is a window behind the bed, but it is off-center, so I hung the curtain all the way across so it's not noticeable.

The furniture was purchased by Jim when he had a larger bedroom, so it is really too large for our small room. It's not great quality, but we can't afford to replace it right now. Jim has said that it is okay to paint it though, so if you have any ideas that include painting--fire away!

Jasper loves sitting on the headboard. You can kind of see the window between the curtains. Take a look at the picture on the wall. I absolutely love that picture and it has to be incorporated in any ideas...

This is the bedroom floorplan, so you can see it is oddly shaped.  The green squares are electrical outlets. The yellow square is where the ceiling fan is located. The black lines indicate exterior walls, the brown lines are interior walls, and the white areas are doors or windows....  The bed is against the wall to the right.

There you have it... Give me your ideas. What would you do? Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

I think I would go with an antique ivory, shabby chic look, and paint the furniture. It wouldn't look so bold in the room. Something like this, and the bedding colours would go nicely.

I like the dresser and window. Even though blue is a cool calm colour I think you need a warmer colour for the walls and windows

I wanted to help Lori but I don't have this interior design skill, hope someone that has the knowledge saw your post and give some tips and advice.

That's okay, Megan. I'm glad you stopped by to visit and joined in on the conversation!

What color would you suggest?  I'm not locked into any particular color right now, so what were you thinking?

Loribeth said...

Oooh!  I like those a lot!! I bet I could get a similar finish on all of our furniture!

I think every thing is perfect in your bedroom but one thing which you need to  change is the furniture, it is looking outdated. Overall its good.

I completely agree, Sandra.  It never was a style that was appropriate for the room to begin with. I'm saving up for some different furniture, so I'm thinking in the mean time, I'll paint it to update the look.

Hm, I have to disagree with the critique on the furniture...I really like the furniture, especially if you go painting it that lightly distressed antique ivory Glynis suggested (or even a milk paint black and do the walls and drapes in light, airy white). I think the look of the room is kinda outdated because of the drapes and the accessories more than the bones of the room, specifically the ones on the dresser.  If that picture you like is mostly black/white/beige (it looks that way on screen), why not spray paint all those chotchkies white and trade out the florals with a fresh white and deep purple arrangement to coordinate with the bedding?  And probably thin them out a bit, too...they look crowded.  I think the drapes, too, are weighing the look down, but I have no specific suggestions there.  Incredibly brave of you to put your bedroom out like this for criticism!  I absolutely applaud your bravery and vulnerability.  You'll make it look fabulous, just like this website!

Thanks, Heidi! I am planning on painting the furniture the way Glynnis suggested. I think the drapes will look less dated once the furniture is an antique white. You know, I never thought about changing the floral arrangement, because my mom designed it for my dining room about five years ago. I really like the idea of change with some white flowers. I love your suggestions!

Oh! You really made me work for that one!! Thanks!!!
